Openers Tyler Hubbard and Parmalee were responsible for raising the excitement inside the Allstate Arena and setting the tone with their hit-filled setlists, but nothing could have prepared the packed-out crowd for the show that was about to unfold before them.

Top-Notch Production

At 9:30 PM a thick smoke began to fill the venue and spotlights made a tunnel effect around the arena as long black curtains dropped from the front of the stage, revealing a long, narrow light structure slowly lowering from the ceiling. Fans had their eyes glued to the stage, waiting for Brown to appear, but moments later he emerged on top of the floating structure. Sparks flared around the stage while he deliveredhis 10th chart-topping single, “Bury Me In Georgia,” earning thunderous applause and screams from his fans in response.

“I want to welcome y’all to the In The Air Tour, thank you guys so much for coming out,” Brown said before requesting that his fans sing at the top of their lungs to the track that inspired the name of the tour. A Career-Spanning Setlist

For the remainder of the 90-minute concert, Brown effortlessly moved through his 19-song setlist, showcasing a blend of slow-tempo tunes that offered an insight into his deepest emotions and heart-pumping anthems that brought the fans to their feet. The singer/songwriter explored the entire span of his career, interlacing songs from his early days like “Used To Love You Sober,” “Good As You,” and “Lose It” while also putting his growth as an artist on display through newer releases such as “Fiddle In the Band” and “One Mississippi.”

At one point, he made his way through the crowd to a B-stage at the opposite end of the arena and gave those ticket holders an up-close performance of his cover of Ray Charles’ “Georgia On My Mind.”

Brown has released several fan-favorite tracks with other artists of various genres throughout his career and while most of his collaborators couldn’t be present for the Illinois show, he was able to bring out his wife,Katelyn, for their heartfelt duet, “Thank God.” Katelyn, who’s currently pregnant with their third child, appeared in her Wrigleyville jersey and stood hand-in-hand with Brown as they took turns expressing their love through the heartfelt song. This prompted the arena to break out in one big sing-along, followed by cheers of excitement as confetti blasted through the air towards the end of the performance.

Another collaborative track that has become a fan-favorite is Chris Young’s “Famous Friends” which prominently features Brown’s gritty vocals. The hitmaker’s tourmates, Tyler Hubbard and Parmalee, returned to the stage to fill in for Young as they helped sing the uplifting lyrics.
