I made them for ourSummer BeachCampfire Picnic, and they were the perfect sweet ending to our cookout meal on the beach.

Once our campfire burned down a little I tossed the prepared apples into the hot coals. Ours were done in about 10 -15 min. but cooking times will vary depending on how hot your coals are your fire pit.

These campfire baked apples were standard camping fare for many girl guides, and boy scouts. And with good reason! They’re so easy to make and so delicious. What could be better than enjoying your soft apples in the great outdoors around an open campfire? They’re a really great camping recipe because they only have a few simple ingredients in them. All you will need are some apples, butter, sugar and cinnamon.

Apples

You can really use any kind of apple you like for these baked apples. Macintosh apples are a classic baking apple because they break down easily. Granny Smith are a classic apple for pies and baked apples too. They’re a little more tart, and less sweet than other apples. One apple variety to probably avoid for making baked apples is red delicious. Although an excellent snacking apples, these apples tend to be a bit watery and don’t have the best flavour when used in baking.

Variations

If you want to add some different flavors to your baked apples you can add some simple ingredients to them. For the chocolate lover, add some chocolate chips to the insides of your apples. The chocolate will melt in the warm apple and be the perfect treat for the chocolate lover.

If you love caramel apples you can add a few caramel squares to the center fo the apple for a caramel baked apple.

We love serving these with a scoop of ice cream. Vanilla ice cream is the classic combo, but if you’re making the chocolate or caramel version you can experiment with chocolate ice cream, or a butterscotch ice cream.
