These Canned Tuna Meatballs are what simple and delicious food is all about. We’re talking basic pantry staples, seriously easy to make and all done in under 30 minutes. Serve them as a tapas appetizer or even as a main course, next to some fried potatoes and a garden salad.

I topped off the tuna meatballs with a spicy yogurt sauce. Made with just Greek yogurt, garlic, hot smoked paprika, lemon juice and olive oil. You can use other sauces here as well, such as garlic aioli, romesco sauce or even pesto.

To make this recipe, I used canned tuna in olive oil. You can also use canned tuna in water. However, I did use the olive oil from the tuna to fry up the tuna meatballs. If you’re using tuna in water, just use regular olive oil to fry the meatballs.

TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: The secret to these meatballs is to ensure the tuna mixture is well-binded. That way they don´t break apart when cooking. Once you have the mixture ready, make sure to squeeze it in your hand before shaping the meatball. If the mixture is too wet, add more bread crumbs.

EASY Canned Tuna Meatballs

Ingredients

  • 2canstuna in olive oil4 oz / 112 grams each
  • 1/4cupplain bread crumbs35 grams
  • 2cage-free organic eggs
  • 1shallot finely chopped
  • 1clovegarlic
  • 2tbspchopped fresh parsley8 grams
  • sea salt & black pepper

FOR THE SPICY YOGURT SAUCE

  • 1/2cuplow fat plain Greek yogurt120 grams
  • 1clovegarlic
  • 1tsphot smoked Spanish paprika2.50 grams
  • 1tsplemon juice5 ml
  • 1tbspextra virgin olive oil15 ml
  • sea salt & black pepper

EXTRAS

  • chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Drain the cans of tuna into a fine sieve with a bowl underneath, gently flake the tuna, then transfer into a large bowl

  2. Add the bread crumbs over the tuna, crack in the eggs, add the chopped shallot, finely grate in the garlic, add the chopped parsley and season with sea salt & black pepper, mix together until well mixed, then push down on the mixture until you end up with a paste-like texture

  3. To shape the meatballs, grab a spoonful of the mixture and squeeze it in your hands, this is to ensure all the ingredients are well binded, then shape into a ball, about the size of a golf ball, if you see your mixture is too wet to work with, add in some more bread crumbs

  4. Heat a fry pan with a medium heat and add in 3 tbsp (45 ml) of the reserved olive oil from the canned tuna, if you're using tuna in water, just use regular olive oil

  5. After a couple of minutes add in the tuna meatballs, all in a single layer, fry for 7 to 8 minutes or until golden fried all around, once done, transfer into a dish

  6. To make the spicy yogurt sauce, add the greek yogurt into a bowl, finely grate in the garlic, add the hot smoked paprika, lemon juice and olive oil, then season with sea salt and a generous portion of black pepper, whisk together until you get a creamy sauce

  7. Spoon the sauce over the tuna meatballs and sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley, enjoy!
